Abstract

Allelopathic substances from Welsh onion (Allium fistulosum) root were purified by paper chromatography and bioassayed using rice plant and chrysanthemum cuttings. Allelopathic substances that inhibited the root growth of chrysanthemum cuttings but promoted the growth of rice seedlings were observed in water extracts and 80% acetone from Welsh onion by bioassay. More growth inhibitory substances were found at strong acid fraction than other fractions while promotion active substances at neutral, weak acid and alkali fractions. Inhibitory substances were observed with paper chromatogram at Rf 0.1-0.9 (205, 218, 233 and 278§¬) of strong acid fraction, at Rf 0.6-0.8 (218 and 278§¬) of neutral and weak acid fraction and at Rf 0.7-0.8 (218§¬) of basic fraction, respectively. From this experiment, the author believes that 4 kinds of inhibitory substances are present in Welsh onion.
